ST BRIDGET & ST ELIZABETH

ORGIN OF THE ORDER OF THE MOST HOLY SAVIOUR OF ST. BRIDGET O.SS.S.
The history of Bridgettine Order dates back to 14th century when St. Bridget of Sweden founded the Order of the Most Holy Saviour of St. Bridget (Bridgettines). The Bridgettine Order was canonically approved by Pope Urban V in 1370. After having made great progress in the way of perfection, prayer and contemplation, and enjoyed prophetic visions and revelations she left for her heavenly abode on July 23, 1373. She was canonized as Saint on October 7, 1391, by Pope Boniface 1X. She was one of the pioneers in order to rejuvenate the declined spiritual life of the Church. She merited to be declared co-patroness of Europe on October 1, 1999 by St. Pope John Paul II.
As the time passed, the new Order suffered many setbacks and God in his mercy sent ELIZABETH HESSELBLAD Lutheran Origin working as a nurse in Roosevelt hospital U.S.A. converted into Catholicism as the new prophetess to revive the Order on 8th September 1911. Thus began the revival of the pristine Bridgettine spirit in all the houses the world over the growth and development of the Bridgettine Order in the 20th century is largely due to the heroic service of saint Mother Elizabeth Hesselblad, who was an ardent follower of St. Bridget
Today the Order has 62 convents spread in 17 countries all over the world, with its Generalate in Rome

Bridgettine Sisters

The first house of the Bridgettines was established in India at Marikunnu in the territory of the Diocese of Kozhikode, Kerala, in the year 1937, thanks to the invaluable help of Rev. Fr. Beretta SJ, the Italian Missionary who spent his whole life for the growth of the Diocese of Kozhikode. At present the Order has 23 communities in India. The Bridgettine life style speaks aloud the Divine presence of the Lord in the daily Eucharistic Adoration and the divine chant of the Liturgy of the Hours in the monastic rhythm of life.
Bridgettine Charism: “UNITY is our mission that they all may be ONE with an Ecumenical Aim, is centred on prayer as the very oxygen of all our activities. In attune with the new dimension of Church’s activities the Bridgettines reach out to the society through pastoral assistance, dispensary, women’s welfare centres, Kindergartens, technical centres, hostel for students and working women, Home for the children, and provide young people specially the poor with a human and Christian Education and other various social works, in fulfilling all our action for the love of God.
